FREE Canary SEND Guide: Your Child’s EHCP and the SEND Reforms 2026
Families are hearing a lot about the SEND reforms, and much of it is confusing or worrying. This free guide sets out what the government has actually proposed for children who already have an EHCP, what isn’t known yet, and what you can do now while the law stays the same.
Every point is clearly labelled as the law today, a proposal, my reading of what it’s likely to mean, or something that isn’t known yet, so you can always tell which is which.
Inside:
Where things stand now, including the national proposals and your council’s local SEND reform plan
When the proposals say your child’s EHCP would be looked at again, by year group
What’s proposed for children with EOTAS, children in special schools and young people aged 16 and over
Who would get an EHCP in the new system, and what a new-style EHCP would contain
What would change about your rights to challenge decisions
What the move from statements to EHCPs in 2014 can tell us
Practical steps you can take now, and questions to put to your MP
The guide is 21 pages and written for families of children who already have an EHCP. It draws on my years supporting families, my legal training with IPSEA and my own experience as a SEND parent. It explains the law in England in general terms and isn’t legal advice about your individual situation. I’ll update it as the government publishes more.
How to download
When you check out, you’ll be asked for your name, email address and address. Squarespace’s checkout requires an address even for free downloads. I don’t use it for anything other than keeping a record of your order. You’ll also be asked to tick a box confirming the toolkit is for your own family or personal use.
Once you’ve checked out, your download links will appear on the next page. You’ll also get two emails: one confirming your order, and one with your download links. The links expire after 24 hours, but clicking an expired link will send you a new one. If the emails don’t arrive, please check your spam or junk folder first. If you still have any problems, get in touch at info@canary-send.co.uk.
Free for families and individuals. Professionals and organisations, please get in touch before using them.
